Model Projects
 

The research project - step four in the Scholars of Distinction program - provides the student an opportunity to apply skills of research and spatial analysis to a contemporary, complex issue in human geography. Guidance from teachers and other sponsors will be crucial to the student's success in the project.

In order for the student to participate in the research component, two conditions must be satisfied:

the student must submit to the Center for Geography Assessment a satisfactory score on the Minnesota Geography Examination, or, a score of 2 or higher on the Advanced Placement Geography Examination, and

the student must submit a research proposal to the Center for Geography Assessment and have it approved.

Six research projects have been developed to serve as models of the types of projects students may propose. Students may choose one of these models or propose one of their own. All research proposals must be submitted to the Center for Geography Assessment. Each student must receive approval for his or her research project prior to beginning work on it. The center and the school that sponsors the student's project will design a time schedule and reporting routine to assure appropriate supervision of the student's work.
